Australian Government Funding.
The Australian government offers a range of financial incentives to eligible employers and employees to create and fill an Australian Apprenticeship or Traineeship position. In general terms, Australian Government involvement is to help increase the number of skilled or "in training" employment opportunities in the Australian economy.
Funding amounts start from $1,375 with extra financial assistance available for employers who:
- take on an Australian School-based Apprentice
- employ Australian Apprentices in industries with current skill shortages in rural and regional Australia
- employ Australian Apprentices in emerging and innovative industries
- employ and train a person with a Disability
- employ and train Mature Aged Workers
- take on a woman in a non-traditional Australian Apprenticeship
- work in drought declared areas.
- travel and accommodation allowances
- tutorial assistance, interpreter and mentor services
- funds for the purchase of essential tools and protective equipment
- incentives or exemptions for payroll tax and workers' compensation
- funding to address skills shortage, growth or emerging industries within the state or territory.
Australian Apprenticeships Centres (AACs), have the responsibility for determining eligibility for most Commonwealth incentives.

Assistance for mature aged workersOver 30 and thinking about doing an apprenticeship? The Commonwealth is offering assistance through the Support for Mid-Career Apprentices incentive. The Productivity Places Program (PPP) may also provide assistance to people looking to re-skill or obtain new qualifications. |
Assistance for people with disabilitiesIf you have a disability you might be entitled to financial support to help you obtain and complete an apprenticeship or traineeship. There are employment agencies that specialise in providing assistance tailored to your individual circumstances. Your employer may be eligible for financial help when they employ a person with disability.This can include wage subsidies through the Disabled Australian Apprentice Wage Support (DAAWS) program, or assistance to modify or adjust your workplace through the Workplace Modifications Scheme. |
Assistance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait IslandersAs an apprentice or trainee, you may be able to receive mentoring support under the Way Ahead for Aboriginal People program. Way Ahead mentors can provide you with guidance and support during your apprenticeship or traineeship and help you cope with some of the social and organisation pressures faced by Aboriginal people in the workplace. For support from a Way Ahead mentor, please contact your local State Training Services centre on 13 28 11. There are also programs available if you're starting a new career or a new business. |
